Pottery & Poetry

7pm 23 Dec, 2006 Clayexpression 's Cindy Koh and two students dragged their potting wheel and high spirits over to Indie Scene Cafe tonight to demo to a small group of people the intricate art of potting. Most would blatantly murmur 'Ghost' and hum the song from that hit movie. I did. Then there was Frank the t-shirt designer who so kindly offered to come demo to us how silk screen is done. We'll post the pictures soon. Meanwhile, thanks to all who attended! With the carollers singing outside, it was quite surreal watching Cindy carve out large bosomed ladies in yoga positions while Frank stamped butterflies on his tees.

Launch of Sharanya Manivannan's IYARI

Launch of IYARI 7.30pm Friday, 22 December Sharanya Manivannan's Launch of IYARI. Followed by open mic for singer songwriters & poets. Free entrance. Purchase of drink appreciated. View reviews on the launch: A room full of poets, parents and pumpkins who quickly scurried away soon after the evening ended. It was lovely. Pizzas from Piccolo's L'Opera were lovely. The salmon on a bed of crusty flour. Some readings were 'soft' some were 'loud'. But I'd bet most of us returned home that night with Sharanya's 'You bring out the Sri Lankan in me...' reverberating at the bottom of our guts. How amazing this world is when a group of people simply get together to talk. Tonight, give thanks to the efforts of one lady of 21 years, in her black sari with gold trimmings (quite like her chapbook design). Thanks to all who attended. We must meet more! Regards, Jaz Bibliobibuli , Faridah Manaf

As this cafe will only have a very short shelf life, there will be a flurry of events from now until the end of the year. We only have the space courtesy of Piccolo Galleria Sdn Bhd until 2 Jan 07. Afterwhich the entire block will be re-gutted and converted into The Piccolo Hotel. 7pm, Friday 8 December Open Mic with Ariff Akhir and The SOFA SESSIONS. We've had our air-con technician pop by to play a coupla songs, Fikri the famed Bodega singing waiter, a boy named Ninja who plays the harmonica and even Ritchie Castro - a very talented performer who basically 'stumbled' upon the cafe upon his arrival. Since then, Ritchie has been busy on the circui...

Wayang Kata II presents....

Malika Booker in action Photo courtesy kakiseni.com Review Wayang Kata II Wed 22, Nov 2006 “While performing her duties as queen,” Jerome Kugan read with a grin, “Cleopatra sometimes wore a fake beard.” This was Odd Spot #155, printed on a strip of waxed paper stuck to a Libra brand pantyliner, which Jasmine Low -- one half of Troubagangers; Jerome’s the other -- had acquired in Sydney. Jasmine suggested the moral of the story: “If you’re working for Kotex, or a similar company -- maybe this is where local poets could start to get published!” Why not? As I learned from the night’s performers, poetry is about exploring different ways of using words to get very, very personal. This round of Wayang Kata featured poet and playwright Malika Booker, down under the auspices of the British Council -- she stepped onstage and invited us in as guests: “So to be frank in this living room of mine, I have to go into my love life - It's pathetic. If my mom prays hard for my career choice, oh my g...

Instead, 31, Tengkat Tong Shin will shed its spanish doppelganger for one closer to its original 'tong shin' roots - a stimbot restoran. KL Sing Song 2006 a HIT!

Sitting towards the back of the room, seeing the fabulous lights illuminating the singer songwriters we regularaly see performing only at our regular cafes and pubs, I feel awe. I love the scene in KL. Man! If only you were there! A roundup? Ariff Akhir belt out songs fast and furious and just oh-so-ariff!!!, Kevin BrokenScar's Melbourne inspired energetic play getting the crowd to repeat 'come back down'... Rhapsody's cool Ywenna and Nicole - like does she have a reincarnate-of-Ella-Fitz-hiding-inside-her voice, Mei Chern in her white crisp shirt and even crisper lyrics, Pete Teo in his ever-so-stylish rendition of BLUE, Meor and his fab strutty guitar playin and raspy voice.... and the night before - an outstanding show put on by Reza Salleh - just melting everyone with his slow and very well paced singing style, Mia Palencia who just knocked us all off with her strong vocals and Pak Pandir - with his quirky charm, Shanon's donut Princess Leia song which stuck to ...
