Welcome to Doppel Music World

DoPPel Music World is what we call our collective now. We're a bunch of people living around the Asia Pacific region, and share news about independent music makers via our Facebook Page #GigAlerts #MusicDiscovery #AlbumLaunch #Concert.

It all started back in 2002 in a seedy part of Kuala Lumpur. Doppelganger KL Open Mic Open Stage is a known brand amongst the indie community in Malaysia as we have been hosting and organising gigs since 2002! We've produced hundreds of gigs and events featuring over 2000 singer songwriters, poets, musicians, artistes; in fact performers of any kind a stage to strut their stuff. We've seen indie acts come, go, stay and grow stronger. At the time, we also partnered with Tan Sei Hon, Azmyl Yunor and Jerome Kugan of Troubadours and hosted Troubaganger shows.

Doppel Kafe
We didn't have a permanent place to call home for years. So home is where our heart is. Now, with our newborn pop-up art & music cafe, Doppel Kafe - we're set to be hosting even more arts & music events.

How we began

In the beginning, we took up residence at various venues around town like No Black Tie, Liquid, La Bodega Tengkat Tong Shin, Marketplace KL, and even at the foyer at SohoKL at Solaris Mont Kiara. We launched music events at Artista in Tropicana City Mall in Nov/Dec 2009, even at the Subang Airport Terminal from Mar-May 2010, then at various locations like ONE Cafe, Palate Palette, Laila's Lounge & MAPKL. From Nov 2011-Jan 2013, we ran our very own 'pop-up' cafe - Doppel Arts+Muzik Kafe+Shoppe at Central Market Annexe (next to Central Market) on the Mezzanine Floor. Interestingly, this is the very place where we started in 2002, when it was a gay bar called Liquid! The cafe is now closed and we're looking for a new home.

Being grassroots is in our blood. The team continues to endlessly pitch for paid gigs and concerts for bands/singer songwriters. Our hard work paid off as we helped produce a two-day Selangor Indie Concert at Shah Alam where indie acts performed on one of the largest stages in their lives in August 2009, then again at the GO-11 rock&bola Indie Concert & Bazaar in conjunction with the FIFA World Cup Finals on 11 July 2010! The stage was a massive two-tiered 60-footer. Lovely! We also received support from Malaysia Airlines and brought 8 indie acts to perform at Malaysia Fest in Sydney, Australia in Sept 09.

2010 was bright lights as we kickstarted the year with the Music Friends Charity - MAS Touchdown @ Skypark Terminal SAAS Airport. This will be the year of magical tours as we head up North for the first Doppelganger @ Penang Heritage City, followed up more gigs outside of KL. In August 2010, we brought 6 indie acts on the FEYST World Tour and headed to Shanghai World Expo to showcase the Malaysian indie scene! Way to GO! Thanks to our sponsors Tourism Malaysia & Air Asia X.

The Annual Independent Youth Festival - FEYST

On 10 October 2010, we launched our first Doppelganger WORLD Open Mic to feature acts from around the world. That was held together with our 10 day youth fest, FEYST.

May 2011 took us to a different level. Our parent company, Go International Group worked closely with the Sweden Embassy of KL to organise the Sweden Malaysia Innovation Days held at Pavilion KL. The embassy sponsored Swedish duo, The Harvest  to KL to perform together with over 50 indie acts. WE RAWKED PAVILION KL that weekend!!! Plus, IKEA and SONY ERICSSON partnered with us giving away 100,000 meatballs and phones. This was held in conjunction with our very own Independent Youth Festival or FEYST - a digital DIY culture celebration with an exciting line-up of bands and acoustic singers performing LIVE. At the festival, two major side events happen - Digital Delirium Xpo and Go International E-Sports Cup where amateur and professional video gamers compete for a chance to represent their country at international competitions around the world! Find out how you can participate: www.feyst.com.

Doppelganger Indie Picks: Y2K (MALAYSIA) meets Superman is Dead (INDONESIA)

Here we go again with Doppelganger Indie Picks. Each time, we select one local and one foreign artiste to share with you. This edition, we are shaking with excitement as we reintroduce two punk acts, both of whom have been around for quite some time. Whilst our Balinese counterpart, Superman is Dead enjoys a fan base of over 5million on Facebook, the other closer to home (we're speaking of Ampang in Kuala Lumpur) has an insignificant amount of but in our opinion, have the promise of being a really really really (as my Italian friend Valentina says) a smashing big band! So the long and short is, the Malaysian band Y2K has been established since the early 2000s and is about to release it's second album. How many albums did Sex Pistols release? Perhaps this article (Sex Pistols' Steve Jones interview: 'We should do a covers album') could be an inspiration to them to reinvent, repackage and just bloody get their band out there more and more and more :P Can...
