Press Release

AZ SAMAD & FRIENDS bring sounds of music to Central Market this October

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 October - From Rap to Comedy and from Ukulele to the Electric Guitar, DoPPel Kafe has seen it all. The DoPPelganger KL name is no stranger in the local music industry, having hosted a wide variety of events from grassroots gigs to charity fundraisers. What remains a significant signature is the warm support given to many artists and musicians who are exploring the ever-growing local creative industry.

This October, DoPPel Kafe begins its first installment of the Musician-In-Residency series. Kick starting the residency will be Berkeley-graduate Az Samad; well known for his signature finger-style guitar skills and playful tunes. Music lovers can look forward to Az Samad’s “Beatle-Mania” themed music afternoon featuring well loved tunes such as Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da or even Yellow Submarine will definitely be on the night’s playlist.

Newsflash! The first installation on October 6th will also feature bassist, Kevin Theseira and a guest appearance by Brooklyn-based vocalist, Cheryl Tan with a 15-minute performance of jazz standards.

According to Az Samad, “This residency is a project close to my heart. It's rare that creative music projects get an opportunity to try out different concepts in the same space. When I heard Jasmine Low of Doppel Kafe was starting a residency project, I quickly realised the amazing platform it would be. This is a chance for me to explore different side-projects that I've been thinking of but haven't gotten the chance to showcase yet.”

“The added fact that I'm performing in Pasar Seni (Central Market) makes it even more special. There's such a long history of art and creativity within the area with a lot of artists who started out there. I remember going to Pasar Seni as a child & really feeling a connection with the artists there. From the buskers to the painters & the energetic street life - it's definitely the heart of KL to me”, said the accomplished Guitarist-Educator.

The DoPPel Musician-In-Residency happens in conjunction with FEYST2012, a Homegrown Independent Youth Festival
already in its fifth installment setting sights to spur creative innovation amongst youngsters. This “rich-in-content” festival kick-started on 28 September and will run until 15 December 2012 with free music concerts, workshops, a music forum and video games tournaments in Central Market, Kuala Lumpur.

The shows are from 4-6 pm on Saturdays - 6, 20 and 27 October 2012. There will be a meet-the-artiste session at 3:30pm before each performance. Entrance fee is RM 20 and is inclusive of a typical Malaysian afternoon tea - Roti Jala, Mee Siam, Nyonya Kuih and coffee, tea or juice.

Cheryl Tan has performed in Singapore and New York as well as her native Malaysia. Most recently she has been heard with the hip hop group Blue Belts, the Sam Friedman Quartet and with companies OperaOggiNY and Festival of Fools.

Doppelganger Indie Picks: Y2K (MALAYSIA) meets Superman is Dead (INDONESIA)

Here we go again with Doppelganger Indie Picks. Each time, we select one local and one foreign artiste to share with you. This edition, we are shaking with excitement as we reintroduce two punk acts, both of whom have been around for quite some time. Whilst our Balinese counterpart, Superman is Dead enjoys a fan base of over 5million on Facebook, the other closer to home (we're speaking of Ampang in Kuala Lumpur) has an insignificant amount of but in our opinion, have the promise of being a really really really (as my Italian friend Valentina says) a smashing big band! So the long and short is, the Malaysian band Y2K has been established since the early 2000s and is about to release it's second album. How many albums did Sex Pistols release? Perhaps this article (Sex Pistols' Steve Jones interview: 'We should do a covers album') could be an inspiration to them to reinvent, repackage and just bloody get their band out there more and more and more :P Can...
