Doppelganger Indie Picks . May 2009

Hi! Welcome to our new regular segment. Each month, Jaz will be on the lookout for some of our favourite local, regional and international indie acts and will link it here. If you know of anyone and would like to recommend it to us, email openmickl@ gmail.com and we'll check it out. This week, allow us to recommend the following singer songwriters:

Malaysia

Artist: Zee Avi
(aka Kokokaina)
myspace.com/zeeavi

Bio: Born in the tiny town of Miri in Sarawak on the island of Borneo, Zee grew up near the South China Sea in a liberal, encouraging household where her father owned an energy consultancy. “I was bred to be a lawyer,” she says, but music was in her blood. Her father’s father sang and played double-bass, accordion, violin and guitar in bands. At age 12, Zee moved from Borneo to Kuala Lumpur where she has been based since. At 17, Zee started locking herself in a room for hours on end to learn to play guitar. Guitar took a back seat for 4 years while she was studying fashion design in London. When she returned to Kuala Lumpur, she picked the instrument back up and began writing songs and performing with a band. Zee began recording her songs on a webcam and posting them on YouTube for a friend to hear. “I remember getting so excited when there was one new comment from some random person I didn’t know… One read ‘I’m lost for words - I shall favorite it and ponder if that’s OK,’ ” which was written by Kris Rowley, a U.K. singer-songwriter with a YouTube following under the name Zzzzzzzzap. He began posting her videos on his site, which began a viral snowball effect.

Iceland

Artist: Emiliana Torrini
Song: Jungle Drum
myspace.com/emilianatorrini

Bio: I first found out about Emilliana when I was visiting in Australia and caught the Icelandic singer songwriter on a music video show on tv. Just addicted to Jungle Drum!!

And so, here's this month's Doppelganger Indie Picks. Have someone you love and would like to share with us? Email it to us for our consideration at openmickl@gmail.com.

Gig 21 June 09: Doppelganger @ Fete de la Musique 2009

It's World Music Day on 21 June 2009 and guess what? Once again, the Alliance Francaise is putting together FETE DE LA MUSIQUE. This time, do NOTE that it's NOT at Jalan Gurney. SO please do not head to that direction. Ironically, this year's day of free music.

Date: 21 June 2009
Venue:
Lounge La Bodega
14-16 Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar. Acess map: http://www.gastrodome.com.my/tsb/

Time: 6.30pm - 7.30pm (event runs from 6.00pm - 10.00pm at La Bodega Lounge as well as TSB - which is up the road)

DOPPELGANGER HAS AN OPEN MIC SLOT FROM 6.30pm - 7.30pm. Update: Slots are all currently full. Thanks to those who showed interest :)

>>> EXCERPT FROM WEBSITE::: The musicians are asked to perform for free, and all the concerts are free for the public. It’s the reason why they are used to play in open air areas as streets and parks or in public buildings like museums, train stations, castles… Furthermore, the FĂȘte de la Musique is a way to encourage the major music institutions (orchestra, operas, choirs, etc.) to perform outside their usual locations. This kind of institutions can also welcome other types of music. In this way it offers an opportunity to develop exchanges between city centres and their outlying areas, to offer concerts in hospitals or in prisons, to promote encounters and exchanges between young musicians and well-known talents. The event was launched in 1982 by the French Ministry of Culture... >

News Updates: 11 June 2009

This year, "TIME OUT KL" is the media sponsor! So the TSB stage will be named "Time Out KL stage". Actually La Bodega stage will sound classical, traditional, accoustic and R'n'B, and TSB will be local Pop/rock/metal.
